The two most popular tourist destinations in Hungary are none other than our capital, Budapest, and Lake Balaton, one of the largest lakes in Central Europe, which offer tens of thousands of domestic and foreign visitors a chance to relax every year. The Budapest Balaton cycle path is a built-in route through which both families and those who want to do sports can easily move between the two destinations – but where does the Budapest Balaton cycle path go, and what places should we stop to admire the Hungarian countryside?

Construction of the Budapest Balaton bicycle route

Both on Lake Balaton and in the capital, the number of people traveling by bicycle is constantly increasing: while in Budapest people ride bicycles mostly to go to work, at Lake Balaton it is more of a sport or tourist option. The new Budapest Balaton bicycle path is a viable alternative for both groups, so it is vital for those who ride bicycles and those open to sports that this main bicycle path is created that touches important stations, eliminating unnecessary detours.

During the construction of the Budapest-Balaton cycle path, or the Budapest-Balaton cycle path (BuBa), several important factors were taken into account: the length of the distance between the destinations had to be balanced with elevations, safe isolation from pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and the accessibility of attractions that become accessible along the cycle path – three plans were originally created for this purpose, the most ideal of which was accepted by the Ministry of National Development.

The client of the project is the Transportation Development Coordination Center, the value of the investment is HUF 4,800 million. Construction began in 2017, and during last year asphalting was already done between Törökbálint and Etyek, except in the interior of Biatorbágy (it is not yet known when the entire track will be built). In those parts where the Budapest Balaton bicycle route is not ready yet, a much sweatier, dirt road solution can be used, which can greatly increase the completion time of the bicycle tour. The tour can be started from Budapest at the 0th kilometer marker on Clark Ádám tér. If we have reached Lake Balaton, we can also cycle along the Balatonkör, which is already largely completed.
